Celebrating Years of Dedicated Service

The Southwest Georgia Regional Commission proudly recognized council members across the region for their years of dedicated service to their communities and to the Commission. Certificates were presented to members representing city, county, and non-public appointments whose leadership and commitment continue to strengthen our region.


This year’s honorees represent a combined over 350 years of public service, reflecting a long-standing tradition of collaboration, community engagement, and forward-thinking leadership.


Among those recognized were:


5–9 Years of Service: Barbara Grogan (Colquitt), Jon Howard (Dougherty), Charlie Sol (Early), Christopher Wheeler (Worth), Steve Brock (Decatur), Jayme Smith (Miller), Kregg Close (Decatur), and Billy Poppell (Decatur).


10–14 Years of Service: Paul Nagy (Colquitt), Anthony Jones (Dougherty), Mitchell Blanks (Seminole), Dwight Hickman (Lee), Freddie Speight (Early), Donnie Baggett (Thomas), and Brenda Peterson Williams (Seminole).


15–17 Years of Service: Joe Walden (Grady), Benny Flowers (Calhoun), Jim Sellers (Grady), Carlos Williams (Miller), Eddie Hopkins (Baker), Ferrell Ruis (Colquitt), and Raymond Breaux (Dougherty).


20–24 Years of Service: Al Hutchins Jr. (Early), Charlie Williams (Calhoun), Danny Palmer (Mitchell), and Elaine Mays (Thomas).


39 Years of Service: Ben Hayward (Mitchell), honored for his remarkable and longstanding commitment to public service.

Rural organizations working to expand housing and community development now have an opportunity to receive free technical support through the Housing Assistance Council’s OneRural Technical Assistance Program. Applications for Round 6 are now open and will be accepted through March 31, 2026, with additional applications considered through April 15 if space remains. Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rural Capacity Building Program and USDA Rural Development’s Rural Community Development Initiative, OneRural provides no-cost, one-on-one technical assistance to help rural organizations strengthen operations, build capacity, and expand affordable housing and community development efforts. Selected participants receive expert guidance on housing development and financing, specialized training resources, and support from a dedicated HAC team partner to help implement solutions and grow long-term impact. Because the program is competitive and space is limited, applicants are encouraged to submit strong proposals that clearly demonstrate organizational goals and leadership commitment.
