Southwest Georgia Regional Commission Staff Participate in 2026 GARC Economic Development Conference

Staff from the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission (SWGRC) recently attended the 2026 Georgia Association of Regional Commissions (GARC) Economic Development Conference held May 3–5 at Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford, Georgia. The annual conference brought together regional commission staff, economic development professionals, and state and federal partners from across Georgia to discuss current issues, innovative programs, and strategies impacting communities throughout the state.

SWGRC Economic Development Planner Beka Shiver served as a presenter during the conference, leading a session titled “Economic Development in Action.” Her presentation highlighted the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission’s Asset Inventory Assistance efforts and showcased ways communities can better identify, organize, and utilize local assets to support economic growth and community development initiatives throughout Region 10.

Executive Director, Suzanne Angell, and Planner I, Sheena Stephens also attended the conference, participating in educational sessions and networking opportunities with professionals from across Georgia. Topics included housing as economic development, recreation and tourism, workforce development, infrastructure, grant opportunities, downtown revitalization, and regional collaboration efforts. Representatives from organizations such as the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, USDA Rural Development, Georgia Department of Transportation, and other state and federal agencies participated throughout the event.

The conference provided valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional development, helping SWGRC staff continue bringing new ideas, resources, and best practices back to the communities served throughout Southwest Georgia.
