Creating Economic Resilience: A Whole Community Approach provided an introduction into creating economic resilience for economic development agencies, businesses, and community members. This course is a continuation of these topics but entails applications of principles learned for specific business cases and regional economic strategies. It will enable economic development organizations that work with domestic and international businesses engaged in trade and export to utilize various tools to understand disaster risks and consequence analysis.

6 hour in-person course

This course provides a framework for community leaders to accelerate economic recovery through the application of community lifelines, essential crisis leadership skills, decision theory, whole community engagement, and resilience strategies. Participants will explore recent and relevant case studies and their economic impact, gain an understanding of how to stabilize lifelines, develop recovery outcomes, and apply the concepts and theory through a practical exercise. Participants will choose one of three scenarios: cyber incident, hurricane, or wildland fire to further localize the training. The last lesson in this course will retrospectively examine the case studies and the practical exercise to facilitate discussion and devise strategies to better prepare the community through mitigation, recovery, and community resilience.

Creating Economic Resilience: A Whole Community Approach


Course Details:

This course will provide Economic Development Organizations (EDOs) with the knowledge and framework for strategic partnering with businesses and governmental organizations to enhance the culture of preparedness among the business community. By understanding the community’s treat/hazard profile and the economic, geographic, and operating risks that impact businesses, EDOs can engage in regional economic strategies that assist businesses in addressing disaster-related risks and enhance their community resilience rating. The goal is to provide context to understand the disaster risks/impact to businesses and highlight the need for EDOs to engage in disaster preparedness and resilience initiatives.

This is a knowledge-based course to prepare EDOs for an in-person/live0instructor led course (part II) that provides tools and resources to equip EDOs in practical tools and resources to equip EDOs in practical ways to help businesses and the community become more economically resilient.

Whether supporting local businesses, engaging in international trade, or attracting new businesses to the region, EDOs play a key role in ensuring their community is resilient when facing disaster risks. Learn what you can do to enhance resilience among the private and public sectors to retain, grow, and attract businesses in your community.
