Planning Intern
General Description
The Southwest Georgia Regional Commission (SWGRC) is seeking a motivated individual who is interested in pursuing a career in community planning. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience and exposure to a wide range of planning activities while working alongside experienced planning professionals.
Typical Responsibilities
- Provide support for a team of community planners.
- Assist with collecting, organizing, and preparing data for various planning projects.
- Manage meeting calendars and prepare and distribute committee meeting packets.
- Conduct fieldwork, collect parcel data, and research land records.
- Prepare maps and planning reports of limited to moderate complexity.
- Produce sketches, renderings, and other planning graphics.
- Assist planning staff during community meetings and public engagement events.
- Present research findings and project information at community meetings, as appropriate.
- Research grant funding opportunities and assist with grant proposal preparation.
- Perform general office duties, including data entry, file management, and customer service
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Hold a bachelor's degree in planning or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; or
- Be currently enrolled in a master's degree program in planning or a closely related field.
Related planning, research, GIS, or public administration experience is preferred but not required.
Desired Knowledge
- Basic understanding of planning principles and practices.
- Knowledge of one or more planning disciplines, such as housing, transportation, economic development, or land use planning.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and internet-based research tools

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong research, organizational, and analytical abilities.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple assignments.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
- Flexibility and willingness to contribute to a variety of planning projects.
Position Requirements
Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to submit a writing sample prior to the interview.
The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a criminal background check, verification of educational credentials, and professional reference checks.
